Other Programs
AVID
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program used across schools to help all students succeed by focusing on fairness and putting students at the center of their learning. The main goal is to close the opportunity gap and prepare students for college, careers, and life.
In AVID Elementary, students are taught important academic skills and higher-level thinking from a young age, which helps them succeed as they move through school.
Key Benefits:
- Encourages a growth mindset, helping kids believe that going to college is possible and something they can work toward.
- Provides academic, social, and emotional support to help students succeed.
- Teaches age-appropriate skills that will prepare them for middle school, high school, and college.
In short, AVID helps your child develop the habits and confidence they need for long-term academic success.
Pando Initiative
The Pando Initiative focuses on individual students who are struggling with school and life. The program positions a dedicated staff member inside schools to help remove obstacles, both academic and non-academic, that keep students from reaching their goals and being successful. Success is measured by improving attendance, behavior, and academic performance.STEALTH is a K-5 program dedicated to offering academic assistance and enrichment activities in an afterschool setting.
Students experience STEM, fine arts, service learning, and health and wellness enrichment activities in an engaging afterschool environment.
All students are invited to apply for STEALTH and a wait list will be created once the maximum enrollment number is reached.
Priority for enrollment is given to students who require academic support.
ESOL
All WPS elementary schools are able to serve students who qualify for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) support and do not require special assignment.
If you have questions about these services, please check with our office or you can speak with the team at Multilingual Education Services to work through the options that will be best for your student's future.
Newcomer
Students may be assigned to Colvin Elementary as part of the Newcomer program if they have very recently moved to the United States as an immigrant or refugee and need more intense support to learn English as well as school and life skills. In these programs, students learn alongside others who are also new to the country.
