Once upon a time there were some forward-thinking people who built a school and knew that at its center there should be a wonderful library. Since it was their desire for the children of the school to grow to be literate adults, they built the school and at the center they made room for a big and wonderful library. They knew that reading was the most critical element in the education of young children. At that same time, there were in that same city some other forward-thinking people who realized that this new school building was the perfect site for a public library as it was their desire to see the entire community have access to books and to become literate and responsible citizens.

And so the school and the library came to be, and the children in the school did indeed learn to read. Furthermore, they took their books home and taught their parents to read. When they left the elementary school and went to the big middle schools, they still came back to get books from the library.

After a time, Colvin Elementary School came to be known as The Reading Place. The children there were quick to point out that distinction. Everywhere one looked the children could be seen reading, reading, always reading. They read at school. They read at home. They read for fun. They read for knowledge. It was even reported that Colvin students could be seen walking down the hall and reading at the same time.

One sad day, the news came that the library would be closed.  When the children heard that, they cried out. “How can we be The Reading Place without books?”  They wished that it were only a bad dream.

One might think that would have been the end of it, but for the children and the Colvin Community it is just the beginning. Wishing is not enough. Colvin students have learned that hard work has its rewards.  They are determined to fill the shelves once again. They are determined to SAVE THE READING PLACE.

They cannot do it alone. They need your help.
