 Congested Traffic Hampers School Dismissal

Dropping off students before school and picking students up after school is a challenging task for parents. Colvin experiences huge traffic jams at this time of the day. When Colvin was opened in 1978 most students walked to school so there was not a huge need for parking or student drop off areas. Now in 2002 most students are driven to school. Two years ago, the Colvin staff worked with the Wichita Police Department to devise a new plan for parking and traffic flow at Colvin to help ease the situation. The plan was then presented to the Wichita Public Schools for funding for the project. The need for improved parking and traffic flow at Colvin was recognized by the Wichita Public Schools Service Center. In addition, they agreed that the new plan would improve the traffic flow before and after school.

At that time, the School Service Center recommended that the traffic flow problems be corrected when additional classrooms are built on to Colvin as a part of the Wichita Public Schools bond issue. Colvin is scheduled to receive its additional classrooms (and hopefully improved traffic flow) in phase three of the bond issue. Schools that were included in phase one of the bond issue construction are currently in the construction phase. Schools in phase two are beginning to develop plans for their improvements. Colvin parents and staff must be patient, phase three of bond issue improvements is coming and we will have our turn at improvements.

While we are waiting for our turn for improvements at Colvin, parents and staff are strongly encouraged to use patience and carefully observe traffic signs and markings around the school. Parking in no parking zones puts students at risk when they are crossing the street in front of the school. Double parking puts students at risk as they must walk between cars. Driving the wrong way in the parking lot or on the street in front of the school is asking for an accident. The most important task is to keep all Colvin students safe. When individuals fail to observe the traffic rules they are putting themselves before the safety of children. Our students’ safety must be our first priority.
