Homework Policy
Wichita
Board of Education policy (P6340) states that “Homework is a valuable and
valued tool in the learning process. Used
appropriately, it can provide practice and reinforcement for previous
instruction, provide opportunity to develop pupil responsibility, involve
parents more directly in supporting the learning process.
For these reasons, pupils shall be given regular and appropriate homework
activities in all grades. Homework shall be assigned with consideration of the
maturity level of the pupil, the organization of the school, and other
activities in which the pupil might be involved.”

Elementary has established the following homework expectations.
Grades First
· Read with your child for a total of 20 minutes 5 times a week.
This may include the parent reading to the child, the child reading a
Success For All book or shared treasure, or any other combination of parent and
child reading together. The
parent/adult needs to sign the child’s Read and Respond sheet and return it to
school with the child each Friday.
· Math
Wings Homework Connection, complete each evening and return the next day.
Grades
Second and Third
· Students will read 20 minutes each night 5 times a week.
The parent/adult that observed the child
reading needs to sign the
child’s Read and Respond sheet and return it to school with the child each
Friday.

Math Wings Homework Connection,
complete each evening and return the next day.
· Students will review for tests from time to time when such assignments
are given.
· Unfinished classroom work or work missed due to an absence is expected to
be finished at home and is not part of the regularly assigned homework.

Special projects may be assigned at times.
Grades
Fourth and Fifth
· Students will read 30 minutes per night 5 times a week.
The parent/adult that observed the child reading needs to sign the
child’s Read and Respond sheet and return it to school with the child each
Friday.
· Math
Wings Homework Connection, complete each evening and return the next day.
· Students will review for tests from time to time when such assignments
are given.

All students in Grades PreK-5 have weekly
Read and Respond sheets that are to be completed and returned to school every
morning. Read and Respond sheets have a space for an adult to sign off each
day that they listened to the child read. All students in grades K-5 have
nightly Math Wings Homework Connection pages that should be completed at home
and returned to school the next day.
