Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conference are critical for student success at school. Students whose parent and teachers are communicating about student performance and expectations do better in school than other students. All Colvin teachers are expected to conference with each of their students’ parents.

Here are some ideas of items you might want to discuss with your child’s teacher:

1)      What reading level is my child working on?

2)      Does my child return his/her reading homework?

3)      How is my child performing in MathWings?

4)      Does my child return his/her math homework?

5)      How is my child performing in writing?

6)      Does my child come to school prepared?

7)      Does my child respect other adults and students?

8)      What can I do at home to help my child do better in school?

It is also helpful if you share with your child’s teacher what your child does at home and what they say about school? Some things you might want to tell your child’s teacher are:

1)      Your child’s favorite things about school and his/her least favorite things.

2)      How your child learns best.

3)      Your child’s interest outside of school.

4)      Situations at home that may affect your child’s performance in school.

Parent Teacher Conferences are to provide time for teachers and parents to meet, school will dismiss on those days at 12:15. Lunch will be served before school dismisses.

Get Your Public Library Card Now

Do you want to borrow books, videos, CDs, audio tapes and use the internet in the library? Get a library card! It is free and simple to get a card if you have never had one before. Come to the library, fill out a brief application, and show an ID with your current address. The first time that you use your card you can check out two items and after that there is no limit. If you have had a card before and can’t find it, it will cost you $1.00 to replace it. You can get your card during the hours when the public library is open: Tuesday and Thursday 1-8, Wednesday and Friday 10-5.

Children of all ages can have a library card. A parent must sign the application and show something with a current address, such as an ID or a letter that has been delivered to your address.

During the Read-a-thon on September 18 there will be a prize for anyone getting a new card, or using a library card. September is Library Card month.

After School Recreation Changes

Have you noticed that after school recreation has changed? Jan Chatman is the new director of Parks and Recreation at Colvin. She and Debbie Nguyen, Community Educator, have teamed up to improve the quality of recreation services for Colvin students. Recreation opens at 6:00 a.m. and runs until school starts. Students may eat breakfast in the school lunch room if they participate in the breakfast program. Recreation then reopens at 4:10 when school dismisses. Students attending after school recreation are provided a snack, have a period for recreational activities, and have a homework study time. In the future recreation will provide life enrichment activities such as cooking, arts and crafts, exercise, and field trips. There are additional staff people working recreation this year as well. This provides better safety for your children. Parents wanting their children to participate in recreation must complete a registration form available from the Parks and Recreation Office or the school office. In addition, students must by signed out of recreation before 6:00 p.m. by an adult. Students will not be allowed to leave recreation on their own. If you have additional questions, please contact the Parks and Recreation Office at 303-8023.
