Windows Into Kansas History

How does history affect the way we live today? What are similarities and differences between Kansas life in the 1800’s and life today?  What do you know about the immigrants who came to Kansas, how their lives changed, and how what they brought to Kansas affects the way we live today? Jump on through the “Window Into Kansas History” and find out!

Task

You and a partner will create a Power Point slide describing one aspect of a Kansas immigrant. Your slide will be rated on a rubric which shows the expectations. Along with the slide, your team will help create a steamer trunk. In the trunk will be visuals that correlate with each Power Point slide. The steamer trunk will also be rated on a rubric which shows the expectations.

Process

1.      Partners will be assigned one aspect of a Kansas immigrant to research. One Power Point Presentation will be compiled using all partners’ work. The presentation will include pictures and written descriptions of: a)why they came to Kansas; b)settlement in Kansas or old country; c)religion and language; d)period clothing; e)recipe from old country; f)letter back to the old country; g)currency from old country; and h)works cited page.

2.    Partners will begin by researching their aspect for their country represented. Internet resources are listed below. Other resources may also be used. Partners should take notes in their own words from written material found. When finding pictures on the Internet, also print one to use in the steamer trunk.

3.    Using the notes, partners will design their Power Point slide with a title, picture, author, and written information. Refer to the rubric to make final changes.

4.    The entire group from each country will help create a steamer trunk which includes pictures and artifacts described by the Power Point Presentation.

a)cover a box with a lid to look like a steamer trunk

b)compile pictures and artifacts with labels to fill the trunk

Conclusion

Settlers who came to Kansas brought with them many of their own beliefs, ways of living, and culture. During your trek have you discovered any similarities between our lives today and the settlers’ lives? What things do we use today did you find that may have come from your group of settlers? Now you have the assignment of presenting your findings to your class or even another class to let them experience the journey into “The Windows Into Kansas History”. Congratulations!
