| Colvin Students Make Great Gains Individual student Benchmark Assessment scores for second and fifth graders have been returned to Colvin. Official Colvin building wide averages have not yet been received. However, looking at individual student scores we know our students have made great progress in reading and math. Approximately 88% (remember this is unofficial) of our second graders passed the reading benchmark. This is up from 67% last year. Fifth graders also improved with approximately 87% passing up from 70%. Four years ago Colvin only had 11% of the students reading on grade level. We are overjoyed and busting with pride at our improved reading achievement. The staff, students, and parents have worked very hard using the Success for All reading program to ensure that all students at Colvin are successful readers. Math scores also improved. Approximately 81% of our second graders passed up from 56% last year and 69% of our fifth graders passed up from 57% last year. Realizing our math scores have not been rising as fast as our reading scores, the staff has worked very hard this year to teach math concepts using manipulative. We feel this has helped our students. Next year Colvin will be implementing the Math Wings program for math. This program makes heavy use of manipulative and was developed by the same people who developed Success for All reading. We are excited about continuing to improve our math achievement scores. Second and fifth grade students and parents will receive their individual scores at our end of the year Parent-Teacher conferences. You should soon receive a notice from your child’s teacher of the time and date of your conference. ![]() |
